Virginal lid, painted with a view of Antwerp seen from the east (the landward side). The date is uncertain, but the painting shows Antwerp after the construction of the Citadel (1572). The painting style suggests a 17th-century date.
Provenance: ‘Madame Croquison’ (Kortrijk, ?–1897); purchased for 250 Belgian francs by the Museum of Antiquities (Het Steen) (1897). Transferred to the Museum Vleeshuis in 1913.
